Stage four supervising tips
Keep these in mind when you take your learner on drives:
- Gradually become more like a passenger and reduce how much support you give them.
- Have them plan drives and navigate on their own and use GPS in a phone or device (set-up before driving) in a variety of conditions and situations.
- Give them opportunities to drive doing everyday things like going to the shops, giving lifts to other passengers, going to appointments, school etc.
- Check they’re driving at safe speeds, following road rules and practising safe driving behaviours.
- Point out any potential hazards they may not see.
- Talk with them about how they’re going at the end of each drive to check on their progress.
- Review their logged hours to make sure they’re getting a broad range of driving experience.
Stage four post-drive questions
In stage four, get your learner to do a lot of self-reflection about their driving to prepare them for solo driving.
Use these questions to help talk to your learner after a drive:
- Is there anything that you would change or do differently about the drive we just did?
- What aspects of your driving are you happy with?
- What do you need to develop?
- How do your driving decisions impact on others?
- What do you find challenging when you drive near other road users?
- What driving tasks do you need to practise more?
- How do you feel driving at night?
- How do you feel driving on multi-lane roads?
- What hazards have you come across and how did you respond?
- Do you think you’re responding to hazards early enough?
- Are there any road or lane markings or signs you’re not sure about?
Staying safe on their Ps
Once your learner has got their Ps, they’ll be driving solo for the first time.
