What road markings mean
Road markings can tell your learner to slow down or provide warning of what road features are ahead.
Road markings can be white or yellow.
It’s a good idea they review the different types they’ll see on the road before they drive.
Your learner needs to check mirrors and do a head check when changing lanes or merging into a lane of traffic.

The safe way to make a U-turn
Follow our safety tips when making a U-turn on the road.
Your learner should:
- Watch for traffic in both directions.
- Check mirrors and do a head check before turning.
- Use their indicator to let others know they're turning.
- Double check for bike riders and motorcyclists.
- Give way to other road users.
U-turns and median strips
If there’s a median strip in the middle of the road, then you must make a U-turn from the right lane.
When to safely perform a U-turn

Sharing the road with trams
Your learner must:
- Stop at the back end of a tram to give way to people walking at tram stops.
- Make sure there are no more people walking on the road and the tram has closed its doors before passing.
- Give way to trams moving in or across a roundabout.
- Stay under 10km/h when passing a stopped tram that has its doors closed.
Broken yellow lines next to tram tracks
These mean your learner can:
- Drive in that lane, but trams always have priority.
- Cross the lines as long as they're not in the tram’s way or delay the tram.
Continuous yellow lines next to trams tracks
These mean that you can't travel in the same lane as the tram.
Passing or overtaking trams

Sharing the road with buses
Look for buses pulling out from the kerb or bus stop, as your learner may need to give way.
Sometimes buses have their own lane.
Your learner can drive in a bus lane for up to 100 metres if it is necessary to:
- Enter or leave the road.
- Overtake a vehicle that is turning right or making a u-turn from the centre of the road.
Watch out for buses pulling out from the kerb. In a built-up area you must give way to a bus displaying a Give Way To Bus sign and signalling that it is about to pull out from the kerb into the left lane.
