Types of crashes that happen at intersections
-
Vehicle turning right across the path of a vehicle travelling straight in the adjacent near lane.
-
A turning right crash at an intersection.
-
Vehicles crashing from adjacent directions.
-
Vehicle turning right across the path of a vehicle travelling straight in the adjacent far lane.
The four most common crashes
Find out how your learner can reduce their risk around the four most common crash types.
Safety tips for intersections
Plan drives with your learner so they gradually get harder by including intersections on quiet, low-speed roads.
They should use the basic car control skills they developed in stage one to help them drive safely through intersections.
At an intersection, your learner should:
- Reduce speed and slow down.
- Wait for a safe gap.
- Slow down for vehicles that could turn across their path.
- Keep to their lane.
- Be ready in case another vehicle fails to give way.
Position for turns at intersections
When approaching intersections, make sure your learner is in the correct position.
Being in a correct position means your learner can see better when they turn and gives other road users space to drive past if they need to stop.
Your learner should keep these things in mind when turning at intersections:
- When turning left, be close to the gutter.
- When turning right, be close and parallel to the centre of the road.
- When waiting to turn right, keep their steering pointing straight.
Giving way at intersections:
Times your learner may need to give way include:
- When there are people walking.
- If there are no signs, traffic lights or lines.
- When facing a stop sign.
- When facing a give way sign.
- When the traffic lights aren’t working properly.
- If they’re turning right with no signs, traffic lights or lines.
- When they’re at a T-intersection or modified T-intersection.
Giving way at roundabouts
Your learner should watch out for bike riders and motorcyclists, as they can be harder to see in roundabouts.
Your learner must give way to:
- Vehicles already in the roundabout.
- Trams entering or approaching the roundabout.
Intersections and give way rules
This video demonstrates the rules on giving way at different types of intersections. Knowing your responsibilities and understanding Victoria's road rules will help keep you and others safe.
