Driving on multi-lane roads
In stage three, you’ll start driving on multi-lane roads.
Multi-lane roads, which include freeways and highways, have:
- At least two lanes of traffic going in the same direction.
- And sometimes, a median strip or nature strip dividing the traffic.
Multi-lane roads can get very busy so when you and your supervising driver agree you’re ready, start driving on multi-lane roads with more traffic.
Intersections on multi-lane roads
Intersections on multi-lane roads can have a lot of vehicles going through them, so make sure you practise safe driving behaviours, such as:
- Checking your mirrors as you approach in case you need to stop.
- Checking both directions in case vehicles don’t stop for the yellow light.
- Keeping safe following distances.
- Making a safety bubble around your vehicle.
Giving way at an intersection
In stage three, continue developing the give way skills
you worked on in stage two.
Roundabouts
A roundabout is an intersection that may have:
- An island in the middle.
- Give way signs at each entry point.
- Marked lanes.
- All vehicles driving in the same direction.
- And sometimes, more than one lane.

Roundabouts and other road users
Watch out for bike riders and motorcyclists, as they can be hard to see in roundabouts.
Navigating through roundabouts
Before you enter a roundabout, decide if you want to
turn right, left or go straight.
Turning right or left in a roundabout
When turning right or left in a roundabout you must:
- Approach the roundabout slowly.
- Use your indicator on approach if you’re turning left or right.
- Use your left indicator when exiting, where practical.
Going straight ahead in a roundabout
When going straight ahead in a roundabout you must:
- Approach in the left or right lane.
- Drive through in the same lane.
- Use your left indicator when exiting, where practical.
